Apartment living has its challenges—like getting along with your landlord—but going green doesn’t have to be one of them. Regardless of whether you live in a small studio or a 2-bedroom luxury apartment, you can make a big impact on the environment by making a few small changes and talking to your neighbors. Want to know how you can help save the world from your apartment building? Read on.
Recycle
Recycling is one of the easiest ways to make a huge impact on your environment. Make sure that you’re well versed on what your community allows you to recycle and how it should be packaged.
You may need to sort your recycling by item, separating glass, cardboard, and aluminum. Others communities allow you to combine each item into one bag, as it is later sorted at a recycling facility. Finally, some locations require you to take your recycling to drop off centers.
Find out what your recycling rules are, and share them with your apartment community. Spreading the word and putting up informational flyers can make a far bigger impact than just recycling on your own.
Cut Down on Energy Use
Small changes can lead to a more sustainable lifestyle in a short period of time. Turn off the lights when you leave a room, use energy efficient light bulbs, and hang your clothes to dry when possible. Also, close vents and doors in rooms that are seldom used.
Use Environmentally Friendly Cleaning Products
Rather than using bleach wipes and Windex to clean your apartment, switch to all-natural brands, or create your own. Vinegar is great for cleaning mold and mildew and degreasing the kitchen. You can combine it with baking soda to create a more abrasive cleaner.
Conserve Water
Don’t take clean water for granted. Buy a reusable water bottle instead of buying bottled water. Also, turn off the running water when you’re brushing your teeth. Finally, putting a brick in the back of your toilet tank can reduce the amount of water used with each flush.
Reduce Car Emissions
Often being near public transportation is one of the benefits of living in an apartment. Many upscale apartments also have connecting bike paths and bike storage. Both options help you to save money on gas while reducing carbon emissions. If neither options are feasible, consider carpooling to split gas costs and save wear and tear on your car.
