For all you vegans out there, there’s a new shoe on the
market that is right up your alley, especially if you have a bit of a sweet
tooth. That’s right, a Dutch fashion brand figured out a way to make sneakers
with pineapple.
The W3RD Vegan Pineapple, made my Mercer Amsterdam, is the
first sneaker in the luxury sector to use the Pinatex leather alternative. The
shoes are lined with a microfiber textile to reduce foot sweat and control
temperature, giving those who wear the shoe the impression that they are
wearing real leather.
More specifically, the Pinatex element of the shoes is a
leather alternative that comes from the leaves of the pineapple plant. This is
a natural, sustainably-sourced, cruelty-free, vegan material. The leaves are
discarded from pineapple harvests, meaning the raw material requires virtually
no additional environmental resources to produce.
The makers even took things a step further by buying the
leaves from Philippine farmers to help support the local economy and strengthen
their exports. The tanning of the shoes uses low water and low production
waste, and contains no harmful chemicals or animal products.
Needless to say, the making of these pineapple sneakers
also has created more green jobs in an unlikely sector.
What other materials could you see being used to make
vegan sneakers? Do you think this is a creative way to create more green jobs?
