This week Sempra Energy subsidiary PXiSE Energy Solutions announced that Sempra-owned development company Infraestructura Energetica Nova (IEnova) would be using its software at the 110-MW Pima Solar facility located in Mexico to help manage the integration of renewable power to the electric grid.
Completed by IEnova in 2018, Pima Solar will make use of PXiSE’s ACT platform for advanced supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) functions, including individual and central monitoring, system control, and frequency regulation to support operations and increase system efficiency.
The platform provides real-time insights into local grid conditions by using machine learning to access critical insights, which the company said it does 240 times faster than conventional SCADA systems. It uses embedded utility software developed and licensed by OSIsoft and generates results based on time-stamped synchrophasor data that it receives from sensors on the grid, to enhance, analyze and respond to grid data in real time, said the company.
The ACT platform is modular, scalable and can be expanded to accommodate any number of additional energy resources according to PXiSE. It is currently in use or is being installed at Sempra Energy’s Auwahi Wind Farm in Hawaii; at Sempra headquarters in San Diego; at Con Edison’s Great Valley Solar; and in distribution grids in Australia operated by Horizon Power, according to the company.
