One of the most exciting things about preparing food for the masses is watching them enjoy every morsel you prepare. But what happens to all of the leftovers – you know, the food that no one eats? Having food leftover that must be thrown away is a lose-lose-lose situation: You lose the money you poured into preparing that food, your customers lose out on that delicious food, and the planet is negatively impacted by this food waste. It’s time to get smart about how we can turn this into a winning situation – and fortunately, artificial intelligence, or AI, is here to help.

A company called Winnow, based in Britain, has come up with
a way to analyze food waste. Its brand-new innovation – essentially a smart bin
— has the potential to decrease environmentally damaging and costly food waste
by half going forward.

United Nations experts report that about 33% of the food
produced around the world – or, about 1.3 billion tons – is wasted or lost each
year. This food waste and loss generate around 8% of the emissions of greenhouse
gas around the globe. However, Winnow’s smart technology may be a helpful part
of our solution.

Right now, Winnow’s innovation is being tested as well as
utilized in a whopping 100 professional-level kitchens. Some of these kitchens
include those of IKEA restaurants in Ireland and the United Kingdom. So far,
IKEA says it has accomplished a 50% reduction in its food waste throughout its
stores with this technology.

So far, this is proof that artificial intelligence can indeed enrich our lives on a personal and professional level – and simultaneously benefit the planet in the years ahead.
