Expected to be one of the largest international gatherings in Ethiopia’s capital in years, the 17th Internet Governance Forum from 28 November to 2 December will gather more than 2,000 delegates to set out concrete steps for leveraging the power of the Internet while addressing risks and challenges.
Convened by the UN Secretary-General, the 17th meeting of the IGF comes at a crucial time when the benefits that the Internet offers—access to telemedicine, digital banking and e-learning—are elusive to approximately 2.7 billion people. The misuse of the Internet has also led to a spike in misinformation, disinformation and cybercrimes.
From addressing Internet shutdowns to bridging the digital divide and safeguarding human rights, the Forum, under the theme Resilient Internet for a Shared Sustainable and Common Future, will bring together all segments of society — from governments and businesses to civil society and youth — to share best practices and experiences that will help shape national and global policies on the Internet.
The outcomes of this year’s IGF will serve as important inputs to the Global Digital Compact that will be agreed on at the UN Summit of the Future in 2024.
In addition to the opening and closing ceremonies, a Parliamentary Track and a Youth Global Summit, there will also be three High-level sessions on universal, affordable and meaningful connectivity (28 November); Digital Rights (28 November); and Digital Trust and Security (29 November).
