People are living longer, signalling our collective success in improving the living conditions for billions of people around the world. While better sanitation and medical therapies and greater access to education have driven the growth of older populations, the benefits have not been shared equally. Some older persons are economically secure and healthy, but many are not. As the world continues to suffer from destabilizing shocks with impacts on health, the economy and social welfare, many older people continue to live in poverty and without access to any form of social protection.
The 2023 edition of the World Social Report calls for governments to take proactive steps to address the challenges of an ageing world and maximize the opportunities that it brings, while giving all older persons a chance to thrive. According to the report, action undertaken at the national and international level will ensure that no one is left behind as we drive implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
