Report and dataset under embargo until 11 July 2024, 12:30 pm EDT
According to the World Population Prospects 2024: Summary of Results, it is expected that the world’s population will peak in the mid-2080s, growing over the next sixty years from 8.2 billion in 2024 to around 10.3 billion people in the mid-2080s, and then return to 10.2 billion people by the end of the century.
The report highlights regional differences, with some areas experiencing rapid population growth and others facing population decline. Such insights provide crucial guidance for policymakers as they seek to promote sustainable development, optimize resource allocation and ensure access to essential social services for all.
The World Population Prospects 2024 dataset offers a comprehensive overview of global population trends between 1950 and 2024, tracking growth rates, age structures and the three components of population change (fertility, mortality and international migration), as well as projections of future trends until 2100 at the global, regional and national levels.
